Genevieve T. “Jenny” Scott

December 6, 1931 - July 14, 2025

Genevieve T. “Jenny” Scott, formerly of Temperance, loving family matriarch who spent a life being with, working with, and caring for her extended family, died July 14 in Dundee, where she had spent the last five years convalescing.

She was 93.

Born in December 1931 in Raisinville Township, Jenny was raised in Ida and later moved to Toledo with her mother, Lucille (Jacobs), and father, Alton Grodi as the young family’s second child and the oldest of three girls.

She attended the former DeVilbiss High School and met her husband, Edwin “Don” Scott, of Erie, in 1946 at a dance hall in Erie. Don had been a close friend of Jenny’s older brother, Gene, and the two started dating a short time later, marrying in 1950.

The first of Jenny and Don’s three children, daughter Linda, was born in 1951, followed by boys Daryl and David in 1953 and 1957, respectively.

The family had lived in the Wernert’s Corners neighborhood in Toledo before moving back to Ida Township in the late 1950s, building a ranch house on Rauch Road. Within a few years, Jenny’s younger sisters, Charlotte and Arlene and their families had both moved nearby, so that by the 1970s, all three sisters and their families lived within 1.5 miles of one another, with their respective children growing up together with their cousins, with their parents just four miles away in the village of St. Anthony in Whiteford Township.

When her four children were raised, Jenny went to work in retail, including at the former Finney Sports in South Toledo. When her sister Charlotte and brother-in-law Roger Vellequette opened a small grocery store, Vellmar Foods in Toledo in October 1975, Jenny joined her sister running the deli and bakery in the family-run operation, working with several of her nephews and nieces and other extended family. The two sisters worked together each day for nearly 20 years and often commuted to work together.

Jenny was an excellent cook and baker and was especially renowned for her chocolate chip cookies.

Jenny loved spending time with her extended family, especially on holidays and during the summer. But her plans for later in life were upended when Don passed away from complications of asbestosis in 1987.

Several years after Don’s death, Jenny found a full-time companion in Lou Stark, and the two spent years traveling and spending weekends at their cottage in Hillsdale County, where Jenny enjoyed fishing, playing cards, boating and the frequent company of lifelong friends and family visitors.

In addition to her husband Don, Jenny was preceded in death by her son, Daryl, grandson, Ronnie Strack, and sister, Charlotte, as well as brothers-in-law, Roger Vellequette and Wayne Ortman, and son-in-law, Don Stotz.

Surviving is her daughter, Linda Stotz, of Ida, son, David (Diane) of Temperance, eight grandchildren: Chris and Scott Strack, Janelle and Matthew Stotz, Brad and Craig Scott, Bridget Dombrowski and Jena Donnelly. She is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren.
