Born on December 16, 1941, at home in Birch Run, MI, Dan was the son of Adrian and Nona (Purcell) Reed. He graduated from Birch Run High School in 1959. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served in the Armored Division from 1960-1962. Dan joined the Michigan State Police on November 12, 1963. As a trooper, he willingly filled whatever role was required of him including road patrol, desk sergeant, a member of the underwater recovery dive team, creating and running multi-agency narcotics and auto theft units.  He was highly regarded throughout the MSP for his integrity, his leadership and mentoring abilities. Following a stellar 31-year career in law enforcement, he retired on January 31, 1995, as a Detective First Lieutenant. Not one to sit idle, he began his “retirement” career by joining D&S Benore Trucking as a driver in June 1995. As the company grew, Dan accepted the position of Safety Director for Benore Logistic Systems, a role that he filled for several years.  He then began working and helping to run the Dale J. Benore Farms operation. Dan was known to discuss farming with anyone at any time. Happy when operating any type of farming equipment, Dan continued to enjoy his farming duties through 2023.

Dan married Cheryl Bolster on July 16, 1988, in Dundee, MI, creating a blended family that included six children. Although a dedicated worker, family was the most important thing in his life. He especially loved the large family gatherings at the holidays. An avid University of Michigan sports fan, Dan and Cheryl had season tickets and enjoyed many years of tailgating in their motorhome and attending Michigan football games.  They loved traveling in their motorhome and spending winters in Tucson, AZ, where Dan enjoyed riding his Honda Gold Wing with a group of retirees, many of whom were retired MSP troopers.

In addition to his wife of 36 years, he is survived by daughters Tammy (Chris Starling) Reed, Kimberly (Louie) Camacho, Theresa (Dan) Hesson, stepdaughter Shannon (Bedford) Embrey, stepson Justin (Laura) Karl. Eight grandchildren Brittany, Daniel, Adriana, Ashton, Madeline, Olivia, Will and Quinn. Two great-grandchildren Griffin and Oliver.

He was preceded in death by his son, A. Scott Reed and infant daughter, Susan, his parents, his siblings and spouses: Clarence (Donna), Russell (Joyce), June (Ray) Winchester, Edna (Dan) Close, James (Pat), Walter (Delores), Lois (Tom) North and Billy.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Elara Caring Hospice Care and a special thanks to Dan’s niece, Lynn Boyes and brother-in-law, Mark Bolster who went above and beyond in assisting in Dan’s care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Light of Christ Catholic Parish.
