Steven Dudley Hewitt
August 24, 1959 - October 21, 2026
Steven Dudley Hewitt, 67, of Petersburg, Michigan, passed away on October 21, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on August 24, 1959, and raised in Petersburg, Michigan, Steve was the son of the late William “Bill” and Barbara Hewitt. A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend, Steve lived a life defined by hard work, dedication to his family, and a passion for the things he loved.
Steve shared 45 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Penny Hewitt. Together, they built a life centered around family, love, and countless memories. He was the epitome of a provider, a man who worked tirelessly to ensure his family was always taken care of. Steve was a man who showed his love through his actions rather than his words, always putting the needs of those he loved before his own.
Steve began his career as a pipefitter shortly after graduating high school, entering his apprenticeship at just 18 years old. He proudly worked out of Pipefitters Local 671 in Monroe, Michigan, dedicating 36 years to his trade. Never one to sit still, Steve also spent time driving trucks for local farmers when he wasn’t working his pipefitting job. Hard work wasn’t simply something Steve did; it was part of who he was.
Anyone who knew Steve knew his love for speed, drag racing, and anything Chevrolet. Most Friday nights, you could find him at Milan Dragway, enjoying the roar of engines and the thrill of racing. His pride and joy was his 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, which he purchased when he was just 19 years old. At the age of 50, Steve decided it was time to bring his beloved Corvette back to life. With a goal of completing the restoration in five years, he spent countless hours in the barn, carefully restoring the car while continuing to work full-time. It was a labor of love and a true reflection of his determination, patience, and passion.
When Steve wasn’t working or tinkering with a vehicle in the barn, he enjoyed making memories with his family. He loved spending time up north at the family cabin, snowmobiling through the winter months and boating during the summer. Some of his fondest times were spent at the marina and out on the water on Lake Erie with his parents and family.
Steve was a genuinely good-hearted man with an unmistakable sense of humor. He always had a joke, a witty remark, or one of his quirky sayings ready to make someone laugh. Those who knew him will surely remember hearing him say, “Mash your motor, Marty!”
But perhaps his softer side shined brightest when he became a Papa. Nothing brought him more joy than his grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to scoop them up, pull them close, and squeeze them in one of his big, unforgettable hugs. Those hugs were his way of saying “I love you” without ever needing the words. To his grandchildren, he wasn’t just Papa; he was a source of love, comfort, and the kind of memories they will carry with them forever.
Steve will be remembered for the loving husband he was to Penny, the devoted father he was to his children, and the proud Papa who loved his grandchildren beyond measure. His legacy lives on not only in the things he built and accomplished, but in the love, laughter, and memories he leaves behind.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Penny Hewitt; his son, Kristofer S. Hewitt; his daughter, Kayle M. Hewitt; and his four beloved grandchildren, Paisley, Peyton, Karlee, and Kole.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” Hewitt and Barbara Hewitt.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
