John served in the US Army from February 1957 to June 1959 as a Border Engineer along the US/USSR border in Germany. When he came home from the military, he and his wife Annel operated the Ida Center Market on the corner of Lewis and Ida Center, where he perfected his sausage making skills, and became a butcher by trade.
