Guy Richard Lassey

December 14, 1934 - May 26, 2026

Guy Richard Lassey, age 91, of Monroe, passed away the afternoon of May 26, 2026, at Harborside Senior Living in Luna Pier. The Harborside staff provided exceptionally compassionate care for him over the past 7 months. The family thanks Lisa, Jodi, Sue and Alyssa who cared for Guy in his home, allowing him to remain there as long as possible.

Guy was born on December 14, 1934, at the family homestead in LaSalle township. He was the third of four children born to Russell and Leah (Johnston) Lassey. He attended Gayville, Custer and Monroe High schools. In 1949 Guy left school to work full time on the family dairy farm. He would later earn his GED while completing a millwright apprenticeship. He also attended Agricultural Short Course at MSU.

In 1962 Guy met Mary Gretzler at the Monroe County Fair. They married the following year on July 6, 1963, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Temperance, Michigan. He and Mary were devoted to each other. They spent most of their leisure time together attending grandchildren’s events and traveling with friends. Later in life, Guy spent countless hours waiting with her in the hospital. They shared 59 years together before Mary passed on July 6, 2022.

Guy was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Monroe since 1964 and helped maintain the church building and grounds. The hymn “Amazing Grace” contains the line “the hour I first believed”. He said he found this interesting because he couldn’t remember a time he didn’t believe in God. He shared this with his son a few weeks before his passing. It was a simple but profound reminder of his faith.

Guy was a physically strong man with a tireless work ethic. While he often worked long hours as mechanical maintenance/mobile equipment mechanic for the Dundee Cement Company, he still made time to play ball, or in the snow with his boys after work. Guy made attending his sons and his grandchildren’s school/sporting events a priority, stating it was his privilege to do so. Guy was gifted mechanically and generous with his time. He used his skills to repair a variety of things for people throughout his life. After 35 years at the cement plant, Guy retired in 1999. He farmed with his son, Dwight and worked construction with his son, Greg. He was an avid reader particularly of history and advancements in agriculture. Guy also enjoyed attending Civil War round table meetings. Guy was friendly and optimistic, he remained a “kid at heart” enjoying a good laugh and a bowl of “the most nearly perfect food”, ice cream. It was fitting his last meal was a Boston cooler his sister Janet brought him.

Guy is survived by his sons Dwight (Shelly) and Greg (Julie). Five grandchildren, Alyssa, Brent, Brooke (Kyle), Graham (Katherine) and Greer (Paton). His sister Janet (Doug) Peters. Sisters-in-laws Ali (Jim) Harwood and Cathy (Wayne) Gretzler-Johnson. Along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant child, his parents and siblings Glenn (Evelyn) Lassey and Mary Ellen (John) Metz. Sister-in-law Belle Fulton.

Guy donated his body to the U of M Medical School. Visitation will be held at the Capaul Funeral Home in Ida on Friday June 26, 2026, from 3-7 pm. A Memorial service will follow with Cathy Maxwell, S.A.M. officiating. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or a charity of the donors’ choice.
