James Paul Steils

February 16th, 1932 - August 15th, 2022

James Paul Steils - 90 years of Ida, MI - died on Monday, August 15th, 2022 at Hickory Ridge of Temperance. Honoring his wishes, there are no services scheduled. Cremation will occur.


James was born on February 16th, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio. He was the son of Stephen and Sophia (Jurek) Steils. James grew up in Point Place, Ohio where he enjoyed sailing, ice boating, duck hunting and socializing with his friends. He attended Central Catholic High School, graduating in 1950. In 1952, he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country during the Korean conflict. While assigned to the USS Ingersol and USS Strickland, James was awarded several honors including National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the China Service Medal. While home on leave he met and later married the love of his life, Suzanne Lubinski, remaining happily together for 66 years.


Upon returning home from the Navy, James began working in the skilled trades as a painter. He eventually left that job becoming a serviceman for Canteen Vending & Services from which he eventually retired. James enjoyed being on the farm, fishing, visiting Amish Country, working in his yard, attending auctions and most of all vacationing with family on Manitoulin Island, Canada. He loved his grandchildren dearly and spent as much time as he could going to their various events. He was frequently referred to as "My honorary Opa '' by exchange student Marie Herbst or Eckenforde, Germany whom he loved as one of his own grandchildren. James was also an usher and greeter at Crossroads Church where he was an active member.


Survivors include: his wife Suzanne, sons Timothy (Tracy) and Mitch (Linda) Steils, grandchildren: Megan, Macie, Emily, Sam and Zach, great-granddaughter: Sage, and nieces: Janet Kroeger and Beth Ford, and many great nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents, sister Corinne, brother-in-law Harold Ford, and his nephew Steve Ford.


The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of both Hickory Ridge and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the love and compassion shown to James over the past year.
