Viola Ruth Berta (Fetgatter)

May 9th, 1922 - March 15th, 2021

Viola Ruth (Fetgatter) Berta, born May 9, 1922, joined her beloved Jesus Monday, March 15, 2021, after 98 years of serving others. She loved caring for her family and spent many hours beating them at any game they played. Viola was well-known for her delicious cookies which were prized by all. Achieving a life-long goal at the age of 71, Viola graduated from high school with her granddaughter.

At her church, she ran a clothes closet and taught Sunday school. At Ida Elementary School she was known as “Grandma Vi” who played games and read with the students. In the community, she was a member of the board for Life, was an assistant 4-H leader, and was chairman of the Monroe County Extension council. Many hours were spent at the fairgrounds helping judges and running the Country Store.

She was preceded to heaven by Charley, her loving husband of 53 years, her parents, nine siblings, and a great-granddaughter. She is survived by her four children: Janice (John) Martinson, Ralph (Nancy) Berta, Margie (Jim) Thomson, and Robert (Karen) Berta. Grandchildren include Wayde, Dwight, and Travis Yarger, Melody Winter, Debbie Ahles, Keri Bath, Penny Ball, Kimberly Rae, Tracy and Brett Thomson, Robin Sweat, Timothy, and Tonya Berta, and Trisha Boylan. God blessed her with many great and great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be Tuesday, March 23 at Monroe Church of Christ on Dunbar Road from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm with services following at 1:00. There will be a private burial at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Monroe Church of Christ.
