Andrew “Andy” Lee Nelson

April 18, 1948 - January 2, 2026

Andrew “Andy” Lee Nelson, age 77, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, with his wife, Delores, by his side.  Family and friends may visit Capaul Funeral Home (Ida, MI) on Friday January 9, 2026, from 11 am until the funeral service commences at 1 pm.  Andy’s burial will take place at Pleasant View Cemetery (Petersburg, MI) immediately following the funeral service.  Associate Pastor Brother Michael Cavin of Summit Church (Toledo, OH) will officiate.

Andy was born on April 18, 1948, in Ironton, Ohio, to Jacob and Mary (Adkins) Nelson. Andy was a man of quiet strength, known for his patience, ingenuity, and enduring love for his family.

Andy will be fondly remembered as a history and Civil War enthusiast, as well as for his love of woodworking and tinkering in his shop. His practical knowledge and problem-solving abilities allowed him to fix nearly anything he set his mind to, often amazed those around him. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.  Andy retired from Ford Motor Company after 31 years of service, primarily working in Maumee, Ohio.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Delores (Ruggles) Nelson; his children, Caramia Lee (James) Carlson of Petersburg, Michigan, and Andy (Kate) Nelson of Temperance, Michigan; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Krystal) Carlson of Naples, Florida, Andrew Nelson (Saige Philips) of Mesa, Arizona, and Cade Nelson (Elisse Richardson) of Wyandotte, Michigan; and his two great-granddaughters, Hannah Haley of Petersburg, Michigan, and Kyra Carlson of Naples, Florida.

In addition to his parents, Andy was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene Nelson, Jacob Nelson Jr., Richard Nelson, and Paul Nelson, and his sisters, Betty Nelson, Louise Abrams, Ruth Ann Nelson, Rosemary Russell, Mira Yvonne Davis, and Minnie Anderson.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, especially the tremendous staff at their Virginia Clifford Hospice Center in Toledo for their compassionate care and comfort during Andy’s final days.
