Clayton was born July 16, 1922 in Ida, Michigan to William and Emma (Ruettinger) Dick. He was baptized and confirmed at East Ida Immanuel Lutheran Church, Monroe, Michigan, where he was also married to Barbara L. Eipperle on September 11,1948 by the Rev. Albert h. Gehner.
As a member of the church, Clayton served as President of the Young People's League, Zone Walther League, and Men's Club. He served as Elder and Vice President of the Congregation. He played comet in the Young Men's Cottage Comet Church Band, sang in the Youth Choir and enjoyed playing softball and dart ball on the church teams. He served on the Historical Committee for both the 100th and 150th Church Anniversaries, and was a Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years.
A graduate of Ida High School in 1940, he served as senior class president, played on Ida High School's first football team in 1938 and the basketball team of 1939-1940.
He was a member of the Ida Athletic and Band Boosters, played on the Ida Civic club softball team and served on the Ida Village Centennial Committee in 1968. He especially enjoyed Detroit Tigers games, traveling and family gatherings.
Clayton was a self employed farmer for many years, a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau, and former member of the Ida Farmers' Co-Op. He was a janitor at Ida High School from 1958-1963, and substitute school bus driver in 1972 and 1973. He was a mail truck driver for 27 years for M.C. Eipperle, Inc. from 1971 until 1998, when he retired.
Surviving is his wife Barbara, of 61 years, three sons, Michael (Gay) of Petersburg, Jeffrey (Mary) of Port Charlotte, Florida, Joseph (Robin) of Tecumseh; two daughters, Amy (Terry) Hathaway, of Monroe, and Elizabeth (Jon) Madden, of Ida; thirteen grandchildren, Stephanie (Donn), Kelly (Tom), Adam, Julie (Greg), Scott (Anne), Leah (Dave), Kari (Justin), Rachel, Jack, Brian (Stacey), Steve (Jill), Greg, and Dan (Mary Ann); nineteen great-grandchildren, Samuel, Audrey, Brock, Stephanie, Nick, Kristen, Olivia, Katelyn, Alyssa, Brent, Brooke, Jacob, Ty, Mason, Ajay, Isabelle, Brayden, Zackary, and Megan; two brothers-in-law, John C. (Nancy) Eipperle of Benzonia, Michigan, and Roger Heiden of Monroe; a sister-in-law, Helen Eipperle of Monroe, and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by parents, William and Emma (Ruettinger) Dick, a brother Leland Dick, and a sister Helma Merce.
