Gary Lee Brockway, 60 yrs, of Franklinton, NC, formerly of Petersburg, died Sunday, August 16, at the home of his son whom he had resided with since November of 2008. Gary suffered with the effects of Agent Orange which he acquired during his tour of Vietnam in 1968-1969. Gary joined the Marines when he was 16 years of age, spent a year in Okinawa, then when he became of age he volunteered to go to Vietnam and was stationed with the H&S Supply Battalion. His tour of duty was spent in Dong Ha and Da Nang.

 

Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home,Ida, Thursday from 4-9 PM. He will lie in state Friday from 1PM until services at 2 PM at the Deerfield Free Methodist Church. Pastor Robert DeLoria will officiate. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Petersburg with graveside services under the auspices of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6509, Summerfield.

 

Born March 26, 1949, in Toledo, he was the son of Walter O. and Esther May (Hatt) Brockway. Gary was a self-taught truck driver for thirty-eight years, living his dream behind the wheel of an eighteen wheeler.

 

He leaves three children: son, Lee (Pam) Brockway, of Franklinton, NC, daughter, Belinda Brockway, of Monroe, son, Gary D. Monhollen, of Toledo; his father, Walter Brockway, of Petersburg; a brother, John (Connie) Brockway, of Wayland, MI; three sisters, Helen (Cecil) Sheldon, of Petersburg, Sally (Robert) O'Mara, of Brownstown, Kathy (Wesley) LaFountain, of Shelbyville, MI; and five beloved grandchildren, Dustin, Brianna, Emily, Mitchell, and Noah. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther, and a sister, Audrey.
